The concept of coaching has been around for as long as the human race. From the days of cavemen who passed on their skills to hunt, gather and cook; to modern day where it is widely used in parenting, business, sports etc.
Coaching in its current form has its roots in sports. The foundations being laid in Timothy Gallway’s The Inner Game of Tennis published in 1974 where he put forward the concept that the best way to help someone become a better tennis player was not to offer suggestions but to ask questions that would enable them to learn from their own experience. The new approach to “coaching” shifted the focus of performance from physical action to the mental mindset of the athlete.
Coaching however is based on more than sporting foundations, it combines tools from other fields and continues to grow and develop based on research of what works. It is ‘a new field that borrows from and builds upon theories and research from related fields that have come before it. It is a multidisciplinary, multi-theory synthesis and application of applied behavioural change’ - Patrick Williams EdD, MCC – The Theoretical Foundations of Coaching, You mean this stuff wasn’t just made up? |
